From 8 to 10 October 2025, the Building Digital Twin Association (BDTA) participated in Sustainable Places 2025, held at Monte Rosa 91 in Milan. With more than 440 participants and 160 European projects represented, the event once again confirmed its role as a key meeting point for research, innovation, and sustainability in Europe.
Organized by R2M Solution – full members of BDTA – the conference featured workshops, thematic tracks, project presentations, networking sessions, and cultural activities, creating a vibrant space for collaboration and new ideas.
Day 1 – 8 October
The conference began with the Opening Ceremony, where Elke Moors, Managing Director of BDTA, joined other representatives from leading initiatives to officially launch the event. She highlighted the urgent need for an EU-wide consensus to address the housing crisis and, in this context, presented the Kaunas Declaration — an initiative of the BDTA aimed at accelerating the standardization of Digital Building Permits in Europe. She called on public administrations to endorse and adopt the proposal. SP2025 Opening Ceremony
In the afternoon, BDTA President Eduard Loscos participated in the thematic track “Data-driven smart, inclusive & sustainable cities”, where he presented the ongoing standardisation work at CEN/TC 442 WG 9. His intervention highlighted the crucial role of standardization to ensure interoperability, transparency, and scalability for Digital Building Permits (DBPs) and Digital Twins in the built environment.

Day 2 – 9 October
In the morning, Paula de Miguel led the Hycool-IT workshop “Real-time Simulation and Monitoring of Buildings: Hycool-IT Simbots in Data Centers”, showcasing how real-time simulation can enhance energy efficiency and operational performance.

In the afternoon, Robert Birke from the University of Turin presented DYMAN in the Data Centers Track, focusing on energy optimization and digital twin applications for data center environments.
Beyond the Sessions
The event also included a visit to Il Castello Sforzesco, a Gala Dinner, and the official signing of the Kaunas Declaration by R2M Solution, reinforcing their commitment to advancing digital permitting and interoperability in Europe. The images from the closing ceremony also featured the symbolic signing, a milestone in the consolidation of shared objectives across multiple European initiatives.
A Platform for Change
Sustainable Places 2025 once again proved to be a cornerstone event for driving sustainable transformation in the built environment. Over three intense days, the BDTA team joined experts, industry leaders, and policymakers in shaping the future of sustainability, digitalization, and innovation in Europe.
